Our response to COVID-19

We’re making it easier to reach Premier status

We made a lot of key changes to support our members, like reducing our qualification requirements to make it easier to earn Premier® status that will be valid through January 31, 2024. Unlike some loyalty programs, the MileagePlus® Premier program has no distance requirement to reach status, which means you can qualify for Premier status with just Premier qualifying points (PQP) or a combination of Premier qualifying flights (PQF) and PQP. Your eligible United MileagePlus credit card can also help get you there.

Here’s how we’ve made it easier for you to keep or reach Premier status:

  • We lowered the amount of PQP and PQF you need to earn Premier status across all levels so they’re even lower than our original requirements for 2020. Learn more
  • We automatically added PQP to your MileagePlus account based on the 2022 Premier status you reached at the end of 2021, making it easier to accomplish your 2023 Premier status goals.
  • PQP earned from your eligible United MileagePlus® credit card — including the United Explorer Card — count toward Premier 1K® status.
  • All PlusPoints that expire on July 31, 2022, or January 31, 2023, will automatically be extended by six months.
  • PlusPoints expiration date New expiration date
    7/31/22 1/31/23
    1/31/23 7/31/23

This extension will give you more time to use your PlusPoints to upgrade your seat on United and select Star Alliance partner airlines.

We also made it even easier to earn extra PlusPoints after reaching Premier 1K status in 2022. United is still the only U.S. global airline to offer members the ability to earn unlimited extra upgrades after reaching our highest published tier of Premier status.

Visit our Qualification page to learn more about all of the changes we’ve made to the Premier program in the last year.

Get a head start on 2023 status goals

In early 2022, we gave Premier members a PQP deposit to give them a head start on reaching their 2023 Premier status goals* – just another great reason to take advantage of our reduced qualification requirements.

*Members who are in Trial Premier status will not be awarded bonus PQP for 2022.

United Explorer Cards and United Club Cards help you get to status even sooner

For the 2022 program year, we made changes to the way some of our cards earn PQP and qualify for Premier status. Now PQP earned from your eligible United MileagePlus credit card — including the United MileagePlus Explorer Card — will count toward Premier 1K status, if you also meet the PQF requirement. It’s easier to earn extra PlusPoints in 2022

We’ve made it easier to earn extra PlusPoints after you reach Premier 1K status*. Once you reach 1K status and earn 15,000 PQP, you’ll receive +20 PlusPoints for every 2,000 PQP instead of for every 3,000 PQP**.

*As in 2021, PQP earned from your United MileagePlus credit card does not count toward extra PlusPoints after reaching 1K status, except for the United℠ Presidential Plus℠ and United℠ Presidential Plus℠ Business card.
**1K/Global Services members receive the same amount of deposited PQP.

Frequently asked questions

Qualifying for Premier status through 2023

You can qualify with a combination of Premier qualifying flights (PQF) and Premier qualifying points (PQP) for each dollar you spend, or PQP alone.

We’ve lowered the amount of PQP and PQF you need to earn Premier status across all levels so they’re even lower than our original requirements for 2020. At the beginning of 2022, we also automatically deposited PQP for all Premier members to provide a jumpstart on earning status in 2023. To provide even more opportunities to boost your balance we’ve made PQP earned from your eligible United MileagePlus® credit card — including the United Explorer Card — count toward Premier 1K® status (card-earned PQP can be applied to 1K status if the Cardmember meets the PQF requirement for 1K. Cardmembers with the United Presidential Plus Card or United Presidential Plus Business Card will continue to be able to apply the card-earned PQP to 1K status without having to meet the PQF requirement for 1K).

The 2022 requirements are a reduction from the standard Premier status qualification levels we originally announced for the 2020 program year. In April 2020, we reduced the standard Premier status requirements by 50% for 2020 activity due to interruptions caused by COVID-19.

We recognize that while many members are returning to travel, most members aren’t necessarily flying as much as they used to. For this reason, we updated Premier status requirements for status through 2023, automatically deposited PQP in Premier accounts based on the 2022 Premier status they reached at the end of 2021, and allow PQP earned from your MileagePlus co-branded credit card to count toward 1K status. Best of all, the MileagePlus program is simpler than some other frequent flyer programs because there’s no distance requirement for Premier status, meaning every flight gets you closer to status, no matter how far you fly.

Automatically deposited PQP for Premier members

You’ll automatically receive PQP based on the 2022 Premier status you reached at the end of 2021.

We deposited PQP in Premier accounts to give members a head start on reaching their Premier status goals for 2023.

The amount of PQP that you’ll receive will be based on the 2022 Premier status you reached at the end of 2021. Please go to mystatus.united.com to see the amount of your personalized deposit.

Members who are in Trial Premier status will not be awarded a PQP bonus.

The effective date for the PQP that Premier members will receive to give them a head start toward earning 2023 Premier status will not be changeable and will be equal to the date the PQP is automatically deposited in the account. This PQP will count toward their 2022 PQP balance for Premier status through 2023.

Earning extra PlusPoints after reaching Premier 1K

United is the only U.S. global airline that allows you to earn unlimited upgrades after reaching our highest published status level. United also offers the most generous allotment of upgrades to our highest published level, Premier 1K. As a special promotion in 2022 we’ve made it easier for you to earn extra PlusPoints after reaching 1K status.

To earn extra upgrades in 2022 after reaching 1K status, you must earn an additional 2,000 PQP beyond 15,000 PQP. Premier 1K members earning 17,000 PQP will be awarded +20 PlusPoints and receive an additional +20 PlusPoints for every 2,000 PQP earned thereafter.

Any members with PlusPoints that expire on July 31, 2022, will have those PlusPoints extended to January 31, 2023.

Any members with PlusPoints that expire on January 31, 2023, will have those PlusPoints extended to July 31, 2023.

Earning PQP on my credit card

Like in the 2021 program year, PQP earned from your MileagePlus credit card will not count toward extra PlusPoints after reaching Premier 1K*, but it can help you qualify for Premier 1K status which earns +280 PlusPoints (card-earned PQP can be applied to 1K status if the Cardmember meets the PQF requirement for 1K. Cardmembers with United Presidential Plus Card and United Presidential Plus Business Card will continue to be able to apply the card-earned PQP to 1K status without having to meet the PQF requirement for 1K). In order to earn extra PlusPoints after reaching 1K status, you must earn 17,000 PQP excluding PQP earned from your MileagePlus credit card to qualify for an additional +20 PlusPoints.

*Among United MileagePlus credit cards, only PQP earned from United℠ Presidential Plus℠ and United℠ Presidential Plus℠ Business Cards count toward extra PlusPoints after 1K status.
