FAQs about fees
When will these changes take effect?
These changes are effective for all awards booked on or after October 6, 2016.
Will these changes apply to me?
Yes, these changes will apply to all MileagePlus members worldwide.
Why are the fees changing?
We’ve streamlined the fee structure so it’s easier to understand whether you need to change or cancel an award flight. The fee is based on how much notice you give prior to your original ticketed departure date and your Premier® status.
Is the fee based on my status at time of ticketing or time of change?
If your status changes between the time of ticketing and time of change and results in a different fee, we will apply whichever fee is lower.
Why did you change the window from 21 days to 61 days for reduced fees?
A reduced fee is applied for members making changes to awards 61 or more days prior to original departure date instead of 21 days to encourage members to maintain their travel plans closer to departure. When a customer changes or cancels a ticket closer to departure date, it reduces the chance for that seat to be used by another customer.
What if I need to change both my outbound and my return flights?
You’ll only be charged one change fee, and the highest applicable fee based on the time until departure will apply. However, if the changes are made in two separate transactions, you’ll be charged two fees.
Can I still redeposit or change my tickets at any time before departure?
Yes, our flexible change and redeposit policy will allow all members to make changes to awards prior to departure.
Can I still cancel my award flight without requesting a redeposit?
Yes. However, the fee is based on the date you change your flight or request a redeposit (not the date you initially cancel). You will be charged with the fee at the time you change your flight or request a redeposit. If you are unsure of your travel dates, it may be better to cancel and redeposit because a higher fee may apply if you wait to change or request the redeposit.
Can I still pay fees in my local currency?
Yes, your local currency is determined by selecting your location on united.com or where you receive credit card billing statements.
Will this impact Same-Day Change or 24-Hour Guarantee Policy?
No, these policies will not change.
I have Premier Platinum status and I booked my award before the new fees were in effect. Will I now be charged a fee if I change or request a redeposit?
Fees for Premier Platinum members will continue to be waived for all tickets booked on or before October 5, 2016, regardless of when the change or cancellation is made. For tickets booked on or after October 6, 2016, Premier Platinum members will be charged a fee for changing or canceling an award ticket.
Why did you change the fees for Premier members?
In order to keep the program simple and consistent, we increased some fees and lowered others. For Premier Silver and Premier Gold members, redeposit fees decreased while change fees increased. Premier Platinum members can still change or redeposit awards with no charge 61 or more days prior to original departure date.
